It was a blissful September afternoon, when Fischer High School students, after a long bus ride, arrived at Camp Kulaqua. Camp Kulaqua, located in High Springs, Florida, near Gainesville, has been Fischer High School’s annual retreat location for over eight years, and in that time has been a place of anticipation for all students.
After checking in and unpacking, students began to traverse through the camp, checking out its great activities, including the water park, gym, and the infamous “blob.” For dinner, hot dogs and burgers satisfied campers.
The night’s evening activity was the long-anticipated formal. Students dressed in their best attire to a wild night of dancing, singing, and fun. The first day proved to be filled with excitement.
After an early morning wake up, students began another day of activities. Campers braved the exhilarating Zip Line and Tower of Faith, the latter of which drops students directly down 40 feet.
Students also enjoyed kayaking, the water park, and go-karting. “Being at Camp with all my friends and doing the activities makes me optimistic for the school year and excited for more,” sophomore Avishai Zieper stated.
The evening’s activity was the long anticipated Talent Show, a Kulaqua staple. Students and faculty were treated to an unforgettable show featuring a Family Feud skit hosted by Fischer High School Principal Dr. Paul Satty, a watermelon eating competition, and a group rendition of “I Want it That Way,” parodying a famous skit from sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which won first place.
The final day began with an early wake up, with students back on their buses by 1PM. As students drifted away from the camp, they left with memories that would last a lifetime.
Financial Literacy teacher Douglas Phinney will always remember his experience at Camp Kulaqua, stating, “This is only my second year at Posnack School, but I already realize how important Camp Kulaqua is to our student body, our teachers, and our administration. Seeing everyone bond for 2 days is a great experience outside the classroom, and it is a big plus for being a student at Posnack School. I for one feel blessed and honored to be a teacher at Posnack School.”
